A routine Monday evening grocery run in Greer ended at the hospital after a shopper’s handgun slipped out of his pocket, hit the floor and went off.

Greenville County deputies were called to the Publix at 411 The Parkway around 6:41 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a man had been shot inside the store. Deputies found him with a gunshot wound to the arm.

The man had been shopping with his wife and child, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. When he reached into his pocket, the pistol fell out. It fired when it hit the ground, and the bullet struck his arm.

Deputies gave him first aid until he could be taken to a hospital. He is expected to survive. No one else was reported hurt.

Investigators decided the shooting was accidental, and no criminal charges will be filed.
