State agents are investigating after a woman held at the Colleton County Jail was found unresponsive in her cell early Monday, Nov. 2.
Detention officers found her around 6:40 a.m. during a routine security check, according to a preliminary statement from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said she was lying on the mattress inside a cell where she was housed by herself.
Her name and age have not been released, and officials have not said why she was being held. Authorities have also not shared what life-saving measures were attempted.
The sheriff’s office asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate, which is standard when someone dies or is seriously hurt in custody. The sheriff’s Office of Professional Responsibility will also review what happened as part of an internal administrative review.
The Colleton County Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s identity, along with the cause and manner of death, once those are determined.
