Two men have been found guilty of murder in the 2023 shooting death of Emmanuel Johnson in North Charleston, and one of them has already been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

A jury convicted Qutairus Capers-Mitchell and Ti’Zaveis Grampus after several days of testimony. Prosecutors used surveillance video, cellphone records and fingerprint evidence to build their case.

The shooting

Johnson was shot and killed on Florida Avenue in North Charleston on June 4, 2023, according to investigators.

Sentences

Along with murder, Capers-Mitchell was also found guilty of possessing a weapon during a violent crime. The judge sentenced him to 45 years for the murder and five years for the weapons charge. He will serve both sentences at the same time.

Prosecutors said Grampus helped the shooters get away in a white Chrysler. The judge put off his sentencing for 45 days, so his punishment has not been decided yet.

Victim’s mother speaks

During the hearing, Johnson’s mother, Tina Masca, talked about losing her son and how his death has changed her family forever. She told the court that while other parents can still hear their children’s voices, “All I have is memories.”

The case is expected to return to court when Grampus is sentenced. We’ll update this story when that happens.
