A man accused of running from deputies and fighting them during his arrest in northwest Columbia went before a judge for a bond hearing on Saturday.
Walter Halley was arrested Friday morning, Oct. 9, after an incident near Zimalcrest Drive, according to authorities.
Ran from deputies
Deputies say they saw Halley wearing a ski mask and tried to talk to him, but he took off running. Deputies caught up with him after a short foot chase, and authorities say he fought back as they tried to arrest him.
Two deputies had minor injuries. Authorities say deputies also found a gun during the arrest.
Damaged patrol car
While he was being taken away, Halley is accused of kicking the inside of the patrol car, damaging it and hurting himself in the process.
As more deputies rushed to the scene to help, one of them was involved in a three-vehicle crash at Harbison Boulevard and Woodcross Drive. Authorities did not share details on whether anyone was hurt in that crash.
Charges and bond
In bond court on Saturday, a judge set cash or surety bonds on each of Halley’s charges:
- Assault while resisting arrest: $15,000
- Felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition (two counts): $15,000 each
- Possession with intent to distribute fentanyl: $15,000
- Attempted escape: $15,000
- Pointing a firearm at a person: $20,000
- Malicious injury to property: $2,125
That adds up to $97,125 in total bonds.
The judge also ordered Halley to stay away from the victims and officers involved in the case and to give up any firearms.
Halley is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
