A former Camden Military Academy dean of students has been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student in Myrtle Beach in 2014, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
John Anthony Heflin, 55, was charged Thursday, Oct. 29, with:
- Second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 16
- Contributing to the delinquency of a minor
What the warrants allege
According to arrest warrants, the incidents happened in Myrtle Beach between July 1 and July 31, 2014.
Investigators said the minor was a student at Camden Military Academy at the time, and Heflin was working as a teacher at the academy. He later became the school’s dean of students.
A separate warrant accuses Heflin of providing the minor with alcohol during the same period.
Investigation
The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to investigate. Heflin was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Horry County.
The 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case.
The charges are accusations, and Heflin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
