The warden of one of South Carolina’s maximum-security prisons is off the job after being arrested for driving under the influence.
Shane Jackson, warden of Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, was charged with DUI in Sumter County on Oct. 29, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Court records show he posted a $1,017 bond the next day.
SCDC said Jackson has been suspended without pay. The department hasn’t released details about the traffic stop or arrest, including which agency stopped him.
While Jackson is out, SCDC Regional Director Stephen Duncan, a former warden at Broad River Correctional Institution, will run Lee Correctional.
Lee Correctional has drawn public attention for years, most notably after a 2018 riot in which seven inmates were killed.
The charge is an accusation, and Jackson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
