Horry County police issued a CodeRED emergency alert Friday night, Oct. 30, warning people near highways 22 and 501 that officers were searching for a suspect considered armed and dangerous.

The alert

The alert went out to residents within a 4-mile radius of a traffic advisory near Highway 22 and Highway 501.

Police described the suspect as a man about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds. His name has not been released.

According to Horry County police, the search is connected to a wanted suspect out of Virginia. Police have not said what he is wanted for.

What residents should do

Police warned people not to approach the suspect. Anyone who sees him or notices suspicious activity should:

  • Call 911, or
  • Call Horry County dispatch at 843-248-1520

Highway 22 closed

Highway 22 was shut down in both directions between Highway 319 and Highway 501 while officers worked the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department requested Horry County’s help with the investigation. Conway police and SLED are also assisting.

Possible link to earlier chase

Earlier Friday, Myrtle Beach police said they were searching for a wanted suspect after an attempt to arrest him in Myrtle Beach led to a chase into the Conway-Aynor area. Police have not said whether that search is connected to the CodeRED alert.
