A man who walked into a Spartanburg emergency room with a gunshot wound to the chest first told police a story that didn’t hold up, and when he finally told the truth, it led officers to a 40-year-old woman, police say.

Spartanburg officers happened to be at the Spartanburg Medical Center emergency room early Friday, Nov. 6, for an unrelated call when the man came in with a gunshot wound to his upper chest.

He told them he had been walking along Crescent Avenue near South Church Street when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire. Officers went to the area to look for evidence but found nothing.

So investigators went back to the hospital and talked to him again. According to the Spartanburg Police Department, the man then admitted his first account was false. He told officers the shooting actually happened at an apartment complex on Charlie Mae Campbell Lane, and he named the person he said shot him.

Police arrested Kristal P. Daniels, 40, of Spartanburg. She is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

Police have not said how the two know each other, what led to the shooting, or how the man is doing.

The charges are accusations, and Daniels is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
