Two inmates were stabbed in separate attacks on the same day at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Three inmates have been charged in the first attack. The second is still under investigation.

First attack: lured into the recreation yard

Investigators happened to already be at the jail on Tuesday morning, Oct. 20. Shortly after 10:15 a.m., they found an inmate with injuries to his face.

According to the sheriff’s department, several inmates talked the victim into going out to the recreation yard. Once he was there, three inmates approached him.

Two of them, investigators said, were carrying homemade weapons and stabbed him. He was hurt on both the upper and lower parts of his body.

The victim was treated and taken to a hospital, where he is in stable condition.

The sheriff’s department identified the three inmates as:

  • Mason Taylor, 19
  • Anthony Walker, 19
  • Nycoreian James, 19

Investigators said Walker and James were the two armed with the weapons. All three are charged with assault and battery.

Second attack: rushed when his cell door opened

Around 3:45 p.m. the same day, investigators found another inmate with several stab wounds to his upper body.

He told them that three male inmates rushed him as his cell door was opened to let him out. He said they stabbed and punched him.

Officials have not identified the inmates involved in the second attack, released the victim’s condition, or said whether the two stabbings are connected.

Not the first trouble at the jail this month

Tuesday’s attacks come less than two weeks after deputies responded to two other incidents at the detention center on Oct. 9: an inmate who set fire to a uniform outside a cell, and an inmate who lost consciousness from a possible overdose.

The charges are accusations, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
