The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14, in the Clover area of York County, just south of the North Carolina state line.

What we know

The shooting happened on Lloyd White Road, between Windsong Forest Road and Crowders Creek Road, a few hundred yards from the state line.

Law enforcement began gathering in the area around noon. Officers shut down the road for hours, and crime scene tape was seen across the roadway. At one point, dozens of law enforcement vehicles from several agencies lined the street.

Authorities say there is no threat to the public.

Officials have not said which agency’s officers fired their weapons, what led up to the shooting, or whether anyone was hurt.

What neighbors saw

A man who lives nearby told Queen City News he heard what sounded like a car crash and went to see what happened. He said he saw a car in a ditch in someone’s yard and officers with their guns drawn, ordering the driver to get out.

He said he then heard several gunshots and took cover. According to his account, the man in the car was taken away by ambulance afterward.

These details have not been confirmed by officials.

SLED’s role

In South Carolina, SLED investigates shootings involving law enforcement officers at the request of the agency involved. The agency typically gathers evidence and interviews witnesses, then sends its findings to prosecutors.

We’ll update this story as SLED releases more information.
