When a man broke into his business and claimed to have a gun, the owner of a Pickens County store didn’t wait. He held the suspect at gunpoint until deputies got there.
What happened
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, several 911 calls came in on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 13, reporting a burglary in progress at the Sip n’ Ride. Callers said the business owner was holding the suspect at gunpoint.
Deputies arrived within minutes and took the man into custody without any problems.
The owner told deputies the suspect had said he had a gun and was walking around the business acting erratically. Deputies later found a 9mm handgun nearby, along with other items that had been stolen.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect was heavily intoxicated at the time.
No one was reported hurt.
Charges
The suspect is charged with:
- Burglary
- Possession of a weapon during a violent crime
- Possession of a weapon by a person convicted of certain crimes
- Petit larceny, enhanced
The weapons charge means investigators believe he has a prior conviction that bars him from having a gun.
The sheriff’s office has not released the suspect’s name.
The charges are accusations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
We’ll update this story if the suspect is identified.
