A man who exchanged gunfire with Horry County police on Thursday, Oct. 15, surrendered after barricading himself inside a home in Socastee for about two hours, authorities said. No one was hurt.
Welfare check turned into shootout
Police were called to a home on Hayes Point Circle in the Woodbury neighborhood around 3:21 p.m. Thursday to do a welfare check, according to Horry County officials. Police did not say what the call was about.
After officers arrived, the man started shooting, and officers fired back, police said.
Two-hour standoff
The man then barricaded himself inside the home. Horry County police called in special teams, including SWAT officers, negotiators and a drone operator.
Another person who was inside the house came out shortly before the man surrendered, Police Chief Kris Leonhardt said.
Police taped off part of Palmetto Pointe Boulevard during the standoff, and neighbors waited outside while officers worked the scene.
No injuries
No officers, neighbors or anyone else were hurt, the chief said. “I’m very thankful,” Leonhardt said.
The man has not been publicly identified, and police have not said what charges he faces.
SLED to investigate
Because police fired their weapons, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will investigate the shooting, which is standard in South Carolina.
We’ll update this story when the man is identified and charges are announced.
