A 34-year-old man is facing burglary and domestic violence charges after Berkeley County deputies say he forced his way into a home near Moncks Corner, threatened the people inside and then tried to outrun deputies.
Deputies were called Sunday, Nov. 1, to a home on Canterhill View Drive for a reported burglary. There, they learned that Donte Jamaul Mims, of the Saint Ives area, had kicked open the front door and threatened a woman and her family, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the damage to the door matched what the victim told them.
Even while deputies were at the house, the sheriff’s office said, Mims kept calling the woman with more threats, saying he was coming back and that shots would be fired.
Not long after, deputies spotted a gray Dodge Ram pickup that matched his vehicle near the home. They tried to pull it over, but the driver kept going. The short chase ended on Orion Way, where deputies made a high-risk traffic stop. They said Mims resisted before he was taken into custody.
When deputies searched the truck, they found a loaded 9mm handgun and ammunition.
Mims is charged with:
- First-degree burglary
- First-degree domestic violence
- Failure to stop for blue lights
- Resisting arrest
Sheriff Duane Lewis said threats involving guns are taken seriously by his deputies. The investigation is continuing.
The charges are accusations, and Mims is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
