A driver died early Monday after their SUV ran off the road and flipped over in the Gaston area of Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

What happened

The crash happened around 2:50 a.m. on U.S. 321 near Woodcote Drive, said Master Trooper William Bennett.

Troopers say a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe was heading north when it ran off the left side of the road, went down an embankment and overturned.

The driver, who was alone in the SUV, died at the scene. No one else was hurt.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not released the driver’s name. Troopers have not said whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt or what caused the SUV to leave the road.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
