An 85-year-old Goose Creek man was shot and killed by Berkeley County deputies after investigators say he pointed a gun at them while they were responding to a report of a shooting at a home.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office identified him as William B. Davis Jr. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 11:31 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
What happened
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Berkeley County deputies were called to a home on Freehold Court in Goose Creek for a reported disturbance.
While deputies were on the way, they got new information that someone at the home had been shot. That person was taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials have not released their name or condition.
SLED says deputies then encountered a man, later identified as Davis, who came out of the home armed with a gun. Investigators say he pointed the gun at deputies, and deputies shot him.
No deputies were hurt.
Questions still unanswered
Officials have not said how Davis and the injured person knew each other, who shot the first victim, or what led to the disturbance. The deputies involved have not been named.
SLED investigating
SLED is investigating the shooting at the request of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, which is standard in South Carolina. Investigators will gather evidence and interview witnesses, then send their findings to prosecutors.
According to SLED, this was the 32nd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first involving the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office this year.
It was one of two officer-involved shootings in South Carolina that day. Hours later, York County deputies shot a man near Clover after a chase.
We’ll update this story as more information is released.
