A 76-year-old man was shot and a 51-year-old suspect was hurt early Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, inside a home in Greenwood, according to the Greenwood Police Department. An officer fired his weapon during the incident, and SLED has been asked to investigate.

What happened

Officers were called to a home on Hunter Street around 4:30 a.m. after a report that someone had been shot.

Police said officers forced their way inside after hearing loud shouting from the back of the home. They found the 76-year-old man with a gunshot wound and the 51-year-old suspect armed with a gun.

According to police, the suspect pointed his gun at an officer, and another officer fired his weapon. The suspect then ran into another room, where police said he suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have not said whether the officer’s shot hit the suspect.

Conditions unknown

Both the 76-year-old man and the suspect were taken to a hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

The suspect is in custody, but police are withholding his name while the investigation continues. Police have not said how the two men knew each other or what led to the shooting.

SLED investigating

As is standard in South Carolina when an officer fires a weapon, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been asked to investigate.

We’ll update this story as more information is released.
