A 19-year-old North Charleston man was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7, after police say they found a stolen handgun in a car during a traffic stop in the Dorchester Terrace neighborhood.
What happened
Patrol officers with the North Charleston Police Department were in the area of Kent Avenue and Bailey Drive a little after 6 p.m. when they spotted a car making several traffic violations, including rolling through a stop sign.
Officers pulled the car over. Police say that when they walked up to the vehicle, they noticed the smell of marijuana, which gave them reason to search it.
Gun had two serial numbers
During the search, officers found a handgun. They noticed something unusual about it: the gun had two different serial numbers on it.
When officers ran the numbers, one of them came back as belonging to a stolen firearm.
Passenger arrested
The passenger in the car, Sadarus Journey Daquan Williams of North Charleston, was arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods. He was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Police did not say whether the driver was charged.
Williams is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
