A Chester County deputy fired at a 19-year-old during a foot chase early Sunday, Oct. 18, after a shooting at a large gathering left one person hurt, according to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
What happened
Deputies were called to a report of a large gathering on Cushman Drive in Chester around 2:45 a.m. Shortly after, a gunshot was fired and one person was hurt. Officials have not released that person’s name or condition.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies encountered Ty’Quavious Mcclurkin, 19, at the scene and gave him commands. Deputies then chased him on foot, and a deputy fired at him.
Deputies say they found a gun on Mcclurkin.
Officials have not said whether Mcclurkin was hit, what led the deputy to fire, or whether Mcclurkin is connected to the first shooting.
Held on Rock Hill warrants
Mcclurkin was taken into custody and is being held on outstanding warrants from the Rock Hill Police Department.
No charges have been filed yet in connection with Sunday’s shootings. The sheriff’s office says charges are pending while the investigation continues.
SLED investigating both shootings
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating both the shooting at the gathering and the deputy’s gunfire. The deputy who fired has been placed on administrative duty while SLED investigates and the sheriff’s office conducts an internal review.
Neighbors worried
A longtime resident of the neighborhood told WCNC he was inside his home when he heard the gunshots, and that the violence has left him worried about his safety at night. He urged neighbors to work with law enforcement, saying residents should “help law enforcement help you.”
We’ll update this story as more information is released.
