A 35-year-old Charleston woman has been charged with murder after a shooting in downtown Charleston left one man dead and a woman hurt, according to the Charleston Police Department.
What happened
Officers were called to South Street around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, after a report of a shooting. They found a man dead from a gunshot wound. A second victim, a 47-year-old woman, was found with a gunshot wound inside a nearby home.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Chevelle Hamilton, 46, of Charleston. Police have not shared an update on the woman’s condition.
Investigators say both victims were shot by someone they knew after an argument over a drug deal.
Arrest
Detectives arrested Susan Lee Wright, 35, of Charleston, on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Charleston Police Department headquarters.
She is charged with:
- Murder
- Assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature
- Possession of a firearm during a violent crime
- Unlawful possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent offense
The last charge means Wright has a prior violent conviction that bars her from having a gun under South Carolina law. Police have not shared details about that past case.
Wright is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center while she waits for a bond hearing.
The investigation is still active.
Wright is presumed innocent unless and until she is proven guilty in court.
